Pride Cinema Screening: On Chesil Beach
It’s the summer of 1962 and England is still at least a year away from the upcoming great social changes: Beatlemania, the sexual revolution and the Swinging Sixties. We first meet the main characters, Florence and Edward, in their twenties, on their wedding day. The newlyweds are staying at an old-fashioned hotel in Dorset near Chesil Beach. As the time of their first marital sex slowly approaches, the tension builds and awkwardness creeps into the room. The disaster of their first sexual attempt is followed by an argument and a crucially important conversation on Chesil Beach… As viewers, we get to know the characters through flashbacks illustrating the history of their relationship, their family backgrounds and their personality differences. Together with the characters, we follow their journey, which takes a fundamentally different direction after the events on Chesil Beach…
