Classical Concerts at Werich’s: American-British Concert of LGBT+ Composers
The program of this concert which will be held as part of the Prague Pride Festival includes songs from classical song cycles, opera arias and musical songs, thus offering a colorful, one could even say rainbow-colored mosaic of varying perspectives on what constitutes American and British “classical” music. Many of these works were written by LGBT+ composers, but the program doesn’t present them in isolation, but as part of a whole. An interesting aspect and a connection to the Werich Villa is the fact that the musical Finian’s Rainbow was translated by Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich.
You will hear, for example:
B. Britten: A Charm of Lullabies
L. Bernstein: I Hate Music
L. Lehmann: Bird Songs (selection)
E. Smyth: selected works
G. Gershwin: Summertime (Porgy and Bess)
G. Gershwin: selected works
F. Loewe: Wouldn’t it be loverly?, I could have danced all night (My Fair Lady)
B. Lane: Our Little Lark (Finian’s Rainbow)
L. Weber: Wishing you were, Angel of Music (Phantom of the Opera)
L. Bernstein: Tonight (West Side Story)
The concert will take place at Kampa in Prague, in the garden of the Werich Villa and its unique genius loci. In case of bad weather, the concert will be moved to the Villa’s cozy attic. The concert will delight both those who love classical music as well as those who are just discovering its beauty.
