Pride Cinema Screening: Zdaleka / From Afar

Armando, an established denture shop owner in his fifties, has his eyes set on Elder, a troubled young man struggling to make his way through life on the outskirts of the Venezuelan capital Caracas. What begins as prostitution on the streets soon turns into a taciturn, unpredictable and unbalanced relationship in which both parties struggle to overcome their initial aggression, distance and the scars of their past. In this debut, Lorenzo Vigas works with strict distancing, radical narrative ellipsis and the depersonalized backdrop of Caracas’ periphery. Their tumultuous relationship is thus transformed into an unsettling sequence of unfinished fragments whose power lies precisely in the distance the film maintains from its characters. It is by far the most compelling portrayal of emotional emptiness, manipulativeness, and the fact that sometimes it is the closeness with another person that can ultimately and fatally reveal the insurmountable depth of our loneliness.

Edison Filmhub is a single-screen cinema with a café in the center of Prague. They enjoy European art films, but they wouldn’t turn our noses up at a Hollywood blockbuster either. If you love all the flavors of cinema like they do, you’ve found a new home.
