Seeing for Yourself: LGBT+ Stories from the CIS

The Russian-speaking LGBT+ community VMĚSTĚ invites you to an evening of film and meaningful open dialogue. We’ll be screening Sickness, a film about the life and challenges faced by LGBT+ people in the Commonwealth of Independent States. This film is not just a story — it’s a powerful testimony to the reality lived by thousands: from the struggle for acceptance to the pursuit of the freedom to be oneself.
After the screening, we’ll hold a discussion where we’ll share impressions, thoughts, and personal experiences. We’ll focus on how film can be a tool for visibility and change.
The screening and the discussion will be held in Russian only.
About the film Sickness
At the age of 16, Ana’s parents sent her to a psychiatric hospital, where she was forcibly “treated” for homosexuality. Five long years in the hospital left an indelible mark on her soul. Now Ana is finally free, but she is close to suicide, as she can no longer trust people. Everyone she ever loved has turned away from her and betrayed her. And yet, the young woman is waiting for her one and only — the one who will be able to accept her despite her post-traumatic disorder. Martina, it seems, might be that person. The two are in love and planning a wedding. But Ana is so obsessed with her past that Martina’s patience and devotion are wearing thin. The main meaning of Ana’s life is revenge against those who once hurt her. Relationships and a future with Martina interest her far less. Will Ana be able to overcome the horrors of her past and start a new life with her beloved, or is she doomed to loneliness?
Awards: 2016 — Arthouse Film Festival (Toronto, Canada), “Best Documentary Film”
The name of the movie is “Болезнь” (from Russian – Sickness)
