Mezipatra and One World Film Screening: Queer as Punk

“We’re Malaysian and we’re queer!” The chant that opens every show sets the tone for punk band Shh…Diam!’s fight for freedom in a strictly Muslim country – both on- and offstage.

In Malaysia, political power has long been intertwined with religious conservatism, and LGBTQ+ people face systematic discrimination and arrests there. The documentary offers an intense, multi-year portrait of a four-member band that openly challenges patriarchy and the strict Sharia law. Their fight for equal rights unfolds not only at protests and on concert stages, but also behind closed doors, where they pursue understanding and acceptance within their own families with the same determination.

The film explores political engagement, bodily transformation, and self-expression, revealing how difficult it is to live authentically in a society that harshly suppresses sexual and gender differences.

The event is organised together with the One World Human Rights Film Festival.
