Mezipatra: Religion, Power and Queer Rights

The discussion will take a broader look at regions where religious leaders—often holding political power as well—claim the authority to decide, based on their own interpretation of religious doctrine, what rights queer people should have.
We’ll be joined by activists and researchers who study the state of LGBTQ+ rights in these countries, as well as people with firsthand experience of human rights violations. Among the speakers is Daniyar Sabitov, a former LGBTQ+ activist from Kazakhstan and one of the founders of the country’s first LGBTQ+ media outlet, Kok.team. He has been living in the Czech Republic for several years and is currently affiliated with Charles University.
The discussion will be held in English.
The discussion will be followed by a screening of a film about an activist music group in Malaysia, whose members are unable to live freely as queer people and face discrimination as well as the risk of arrest.
