The student association Majlis, in collaboration with the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, presents Caravan—a series of Middle Eastern films accompanied by discussions.

Mina and her husband Halim run a traditional caftan shop in Morocco. Mina takes care of the sales, while Halim lovingly sews each caftan by hand, honoring the legacy of traditional craftsmanship. Their marriage is harmonious, despite Mina’s fragile health and Halim’s sexual orientation, which Mina quietly accepts. But the market is not kind to tradition—customers demand quick delivery—so Mina and Halim are forced to hire help. When the young, handsome, and eager Youssef joins them, the delicate balance of their relationship begins to shift. Yet the emerging love triangle unfolds in unexpected ways…

Director Maryam Touzani tells this story with the same care, patience, and tenderness Halim puts into his craft. Her second feature, following the Cannes-acclaimed Adam (Un Certain Regard, 2019), offers an empathetic look at the taboo subject of homosexuality in Morocco—while also presenting a heartfelt and original defense of the institution of marriage.

The screening is followed by a discussion with a guest whose full name cannot be disclosed for security reasons. Michael is a sociologist and researcher focused on human rights, social justice, and the impact of social structures on marginalized groups, particularly LGBT+ individuals, in the Middle East and North Africa.

The discussion will be held in English.
