KAR\u00c1SKOVA GALERIE A&nbsp;KNIHOVNA\/ KAR\u00c1SEK\u2019S GALLERY AND LIBRARY \u2014 \u00dajezd 450\/4\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>In the 1925 opening of Tyr\u0161\u2019s house (formerly Michnov\u2019s palace), Ji\u0159\u00ed Kar\u00e1sek ze Lvovic\u2019s gallery launched as Prague\u2019s biggest modern art exhibit. Kar\u00e1sek dreamt of a&nbsp;Slavic gallery as cultural unity. Polish artist Wlastimil Hofman contributed homoerotic works featuring Ganymede, Endymion, and St. Sebastian. The gallery also included a&nbsp;public library with homofilian literature \u2014 think Plato, Sappho, Freud. Kar\u00e1sek hosted creative salons in the space. Though his collection was later absorbed by the Literature Memorial, it remains a&nbsp;symbol of queer cultural vision.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. BYT V\u00c1CLAVA KR\u0160KY \/ V\u00c1CLAV KR\u0160KA\u2019S APARTMENT \u2014 Prokopsk\u00e1 295\/6\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>In 1940, filmmaker and novelist V\u00e1clav Kr\u0161ka (1900\u20131969) moved here with his housekeeper; his partner Jarka Ber\u00e1nek joined post-war. Kr\u0161ka\u2019s homoerotic novels (e.g., <em>Boy with Goats\u2019 Legs<\/em>, <em>Dionysus with a&nbsp;Rose<\/em>) and films like <em>Silver Wind<\/em> celebrated youthful beauty and supported Cup\u00e1k\u2019s career despite his sexuality. This flat functioned as an invitation\u2011only salon. A&nbsp;witness recalled: \u201cYou had to be invited. There wasn\u2019t a&nbsp;fixed schedule \u2014 just come by for coffee. We were considered an inferior race, so nobody cared.\u201d Drag artist Son\u00e1ta (Ota Tasinato) made her debut here.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. BYT EDUARDA KOHOUTA \/ EDUARD KOHOUT\u2019S APARTMENT \u2014 Na Kamp\u011b 512\/11<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>From 1930, actor Eduard Kohout (1889\u20131976) lived here \u2014 nicknamed the \u201cPrince of Actors from Kampa.\u201d He socialized with Kr\u0161ka and Cup\u00e1k, frequenting the Karlovy Baths and salon circles. Actor Vladim\u00edr Marek remembered meeting him: \u201cEd\u00e1\u010dek said to me, \u2018My romantic draperies.\u2019\u201d In the \u201940s, Kohout collaborated with Kr\u0161ka on films with clear homoerotic subtext (<em>Night Butterfly<\/em>, <em>Boys on the River<\/em>), becoming a&nbsp;quiet icon for young gay men \u2014 carrying tales from the theater\u2019s backstage.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>BYT REN\u00c9HO GROMWELLA \/ REN\u00c9 GROMWELL\u2019S APARTMENT \u2014 Ko\u0159ensk\u00e9ho 1107\/15\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>In 1935, Brno-born drag artist Alb\u00edn Pleva (stage name Ren\u00e9 Gromwell) lived here at age 23. Praised in <em>Hlas<\/em> for his art: \u201cAn artist like Ren\u00e9, a&nbsp;dancer whose art is currency, uses costumes typical on stage.\u201d Offstage, he wore women\u2019s clothes, including prosthetic breasts, performed across Czechoslovakia, and faced police surveillance. Arrested in 1936 in Ostrava as Greta Teimerov\u00e1, he reportedly said: \u201cWealthy homosexual gentlemen are displeased to go to hotels with young men, so they dress as women.\u201d During occupation, Pleva was twice interned in labor camps (Hodon\u00edn and Lety) for livelihood and frequent relocation.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. VIN\u00c1RNA U&nbsp;MIKUL\u00c1\u0160E DA\u010cICK\u00c9HO \/ MIKUL\u00c1\u0160 DA\u010cICK\u00dd\u2019S WINE BAR \u2014 Viktora Huga 14\/2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>This mostly straight wine bar (still running today) hosted travesti parties in the \u201980s, led by Ota Ko\u0161\u0165\u00e1l after leaving T\u2011Club. A&nbsp;witness in <em>Men in High Heels<\/em> recalled: \u201cIt was the first place where guys could dance together,\u201d with informal parties by the Circus and Variety Prague. The bar was extravagantly decked out \u2014 a&nbsp;\u201cflower ball\u201d featuring bouquets from the botanical institute, or \u201cMeet in Space,\u201d inspired by Czechoslovakia\u2019s first and only cosmonaut, Vladim\u00edr Remek. \u201cPerformers sat among people, then got up and performed. They\u2019d shot some cocaine or something.
