Transformed from a&nbsp;former Socialist Youth Union warehouse, the space held up to 140 audience members and gained fame for its central location and ambiance reminiscent of First Republic cabarets. Among the performers was Ivo \u0160pes, known onstage as Miss Ivana, alongside guest stars such as famous singers Eva Pilarov\u00e1, Marcela Holanov\u00e1, and Petra Jan\u016f. The 1994\/1995 season also featured <em>Gay Viola<\/em> evenings \u2014 literary readings by well\u2011known actors with a&nbsp;queer twist. In 1995, the cabaret moved to Karol\u00edny Sv\u011btl\u00e9 Street, later relocating several times before settling on Anglick\u00e1 Street, where it thrives to this day. The <em>U St\u0159elce<\/em> brand remains active, known for fabulous gay\u2011themed drag cruises along the Vltava River.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. REDAKCE HLASU SEXU\u00c1LN\u00cd MEN\u0160INY \/ OFFICE OF THE VOICE OF THE SEXUAL MINORITY \u2014 Ostrovn\u00ed 2058\/2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>In spring 1931, brothers Franti\u0161ek and Vojt\u011bch \u010cern\u00fd launched <em>The Voice of the Sexual Minority<\/em>, a&nbsp;groundbreaking magazine focused on fighting the criminalization of homosexuality, confronting prejudice, and resisting blackmail. Though short\u2011lived (just one year), it was sustained by subscriptions and modest advertising, as promised patronage never quite materialized. The magazine featured articles, classifieds, and queer-themed fiction, later adding visual art by Franti\u0161ek Kobliha and Jan Kon\u016fpek. Kobliha created the woodcut <em>Voice of Silence<\/em>, symbolizing homoerotic destiny. The magazine faced stigma and reader hesitation, but opened new doors of expression. After a&nbsp;year, a&nbsp;group led by Jana Mattuschov\u00e1 and Vladim\u00edr Kol\u00e1tor took over and renamed it <em>New Voice<\/em>. Despite its brief run, it remains a&nbsp;rare and precious witness to early Czech queer culture.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. POETICK\u00c1 VIN\u00c1RNA VIOLA \/ THE POETICAL WINE BAR VIOLA \u2014 N\u00e1rodn\u00ed 1011\/7\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>Founded in 1963, Viola began as a&nbsp;poetic wine bar that embraced poetry, jazz, and alternative theatre. Its spirit was shaped by Ji\u0159\u00ed Ostermann \u2014 a&nbsp;proudly out gay man \u2014 who infused Viola with a&nbsp;beatnik ethos. In September 1963, he introduced the work of Allen Ginsberg, translated by Jan Z\u00e1brana. Ginsberg became a&nbsp;frequent visitor in spring 1965, performing to packed crowds, ringing Tibetan bells, and deeply influencing Prague\u2019s young cultural scene. After Ginsberg\u2019s expulsion from Czechoslovakia, Viola was shuttered and reopened under new leadership with a&nbsp;different vision. Both Ostermann and his partner, Ji\u0159\u00ed Mart\u00ednek, emigrated to Canada in 1968. Still, Viola remains a&nbsp;queer cultural landmark, later revived through the <em>Gay Viola<\/em> series of queer literary nights in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. M\u00d3DN\u00cd SALON ROSENBAUM \/ THE ROSENBAUM FASHION SALON \u2014 N\u00e1rodn\u00ed 981\/17\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>Old\u0159ich \u201cUlli\u201d Rosenbaum (1896\u20131991) ran a&nbsp;famed fashion salon inherited from his mother, Eli\u0161ka. After 1917, he relocated it to N\u00e1rodn\u00ed Avenue 17 and transformed it into a&nbsp;top\u2011tier couture house with an international clientele. Modeled on Parisian fashion salons, it featured Viennese designers and highly trained staff. The salon specialized in luxurious evening and wedding gowns \u2014 and even had its own perfume line. Adina Mandlov\u00e1, who worked there, remembered the warm and affirming, queer-friendly atmosphere surrounding Ulli. Because of his Jewish heritage and queerness, Rosenbaum fled to the U.S. in 1938. His Prague salon was seized and later nationalized. In New York, he launched <em>Oldric Royce<\/em>, a&nbsp;fashion brand he ran until the mid-1960s. He passed away in 1991.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. T\u2011CLUB \u2014 Jungmannovo n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed 754\/17\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>In the basement of what\u2019s now a&nbsp;music instrument store, \u201cT\u2011Club\u201d operated during communism. Initially popular with actors, it became a&nbsp;known meeting spot for gay people. After the closure of Club Globus, its crowd merged in. Writer Po\u0161tulka recalls that in the &#8217;60s, the club even celebrated the decriminalization of homosexuality. Entry was regulated by a&nbsp;bouncer named Ivan, possibly linked to State Security. But memories are fond. It was one of the few places that captured that era\u2019s atmosphere in photos by Libu\u0161e Jarcovj\u00e1kov\u00e1. Though plans in 1991 aimed to transform it into \u201cSOHO,\u201d it never materialized.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. RESTAURACE U&nbsp;HU\u0147K\u016e\/GLOBUS \/ THE U&nbsp;HU\u0147K\u016e RESTAURANT\/THE GLOBUS RESTAURANT\u2014 28.&nbsp;\u0159\u00edjna 376\/11<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>The building \u201cU T\u0159\u00ed b\u00edl\u00fdch ber\u00e1nk\u016f\u201d hosted two important queer venues in different eras. In the 1930s, the \u201cU Hu\u0148k\u016f\u201d restaurant was run by Stanislav Barto\u0161, a&nbsp;known gay scene figure. A&nbsp;police raid involving travesti performers and a&nbsp;young prostitute closed it. In the \u201850s and \u201860s, the same place became \u201cGlobus,\u201d one of the first gay-friendly venues of the communist era. Tolerant staff and late hours made it a&nbsp;hub for nightlife, including sex work and drag performances. Stories from both eras merge. U&nbsp;Hu\u0148k\u016f and Globus remain remembered as the same queer landmark.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. PAL\u00c1C KORUNA \/ KORUNA PALACE \u2014 V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed 846\/1\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>This Secessionist palace hosted three gay cruising spots from the &#8217;30s to the &#8217;60s: a&nbsp;passage, buffet, and baths. Young men would stand in the corridor, making eye contact. One remembered, \u201cAfter half an hour, a&nbsp;stranger passed by repeatedly, looking at me with admiration\u2026\u201d The buffet saw conversations like, \u201cYou\u2019re dirty, go take a&nbsp;bath\u201d \u2014 \u201cIf only I&nbsp;knew where\u2026\u201d The baths were modern and discrete: \u201cYoung guys had lockers, older men had stalls. When someone in the pool said \u2018stall 15,\u2019 you knew.\u201d The baths closed in 1971; today it\u2019s Bontonland.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. KAV\u00c1RNA \u0160ROUBEK\/EVROPA \/ THE \u0160ROUBEK CAF\u00c9\/EUROPE \u2014 V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed 826\/25\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>The caf\u00e9 in Hotel Evropa was a&nbsp;core gay meeting spot throughout most of the 20th century. In the 1930s, it attracted men looking for dates; during occupation, even German soldiers were reportedly drawn to it. \u201cIt was always in the spotlight,\u201d remembered one guest. Post-war, the ground floor became mixed, while the mezzanine became predominantly gay: \u201cThey kind of occupied it so there was no space left.\u201d Writer L\u00edda Merl\u00ednov\u00e1 and her partner, along with the legendary \u201cCountess Heda\u201d Bart\u00e1kov\u00e1, were regulars. The caf\u00e9 declined in the 1980s as the mezzanine closed and it attracted older visitors and sex work.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. BAR ROSTOV \/ THE ROSTOV BAR \u2014 V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed 831\/21\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>Located on the ground floor of the Dru\u017eba department store, Rostov bar opened in the &#8217;80s. With a&nbsp;winding bar counter and large windows, it closed by 10 PM. Thanks to the layout, guests could easily notice each other, making it a&nbsp;hub for younger gay men, while the upstairs Europa attracted older crowds, foreigners, and sex workers. Memories say: \u201cYou either went to Europa or Rostov,\u201d with age marking the divide.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. BYT GILL SEDL\u00c1\u010cKOV\u00c9 \/ GILL SEDL\u00c1\u010cKOV\u00c1\u2019S APARTMENT \u2014 V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed 821\/39\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>Here lived physician Viktor Sedl\u00e1\u010dek (1864\u20131941) and his daughter Julie \u201cGill\u201d Sedl\u00e1\u010dkov\u00e1 (1908\u20131978), author of the lesbian novel <em>The Third Sex<\/em> (1937). The novel follows two roommates: fashion designer L\u00edda and lesbian Sabina, who finds love in a&nbsp;bar called \u201cHell.\u201d Historian Roar Lishaugen notes the novel \u201crefuses to treat homosexuality as a&nbsp;tragic condition.\u201d Gill also worked in film \u2014 as screenwriter, assistant director, and actress. Her literary and film work continued post-war.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>11. MAGNUS HIRSCHFELD V&nbsp;PRAZE \/ MAGNUS HIRSCHFELD IN PRAGUE \u2014 Ve Sme\u010dk\u00e1ch 592\/22\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>Up until 1934, this building housed Urania, the German Prague daytime society promoting arts, science, and cultural openness. On May 30, 1932, famed German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, pioneer of the first homosexual rights organization, lectured here. He told <em>Nov\u00fd hlas<\/em>: \u201cSexuality is part of one\u2019s whole personality and character\u2026 It is impossible for someone to become homosexual unless they have innate inclinations.\u201d In 1932, the World League for Sexual Reform held its congress in Brno.
