KABARET U&nbsp;ST\u0158ELCE \/ CABARET AT THE MARKSMAN \u2014 St\u0159eleck\u00fd ostrov\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>From 1993 to 1995, the basement of an Empire\u2011style inn on Prague\u2019s St\u0159eleck\u00fd Island became home to <em>U St\u0159elce<\/em>, a&nbsp;drag cabaret founded by Zden\u011bk Novotn\u00fd. Transformed from a&nbsp;former Socialist Youth Union warehouse, the space held up to 140 audience members and gained fame for its central location and ambiance reminiscent of First Republic cabarets. Among the performers was Ivo \u0160pes, known onstage as Miss Ivana, alongside guest stars such as famous singers Eva Pilarov\u00e1, Marcela Holanov\u00e1, and Petra Jan\u016f. The 1994\/1995 season also featured <em>Gay Viola<\/em> evenings \u2014 literary readings by well\u2011known actors with a&nbsp;queer twist. In 1995, the cabaret moved to K<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>arol\u00edny Sv\u011btl\u00e9 Street, later relocating several times before settling on Anglick\u00e1 Street, where it thrives to this day. The <em>U St\u0159elce<\/em> brand remains active, known for fabulous gay\u2011themed drag cruises along the Vltava River.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>BYT EDUARDA CUP\u00c1KA \/ EDUARD CUP\u00c1K\u2019S APARTMENT \u200b\u200b\u2014 Novotn\u00e9ho l\u00e1vka 202\/11<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>The life of Eduard Cup\u00e1k (1932\u20131996), Czechoslovakia\u2019s first openly gay film star, began In the attic apartment on Novotn\u00e9ho l\u00e1vka. In 1952, he was arrested due to a&nbsp;denunciation, expelled from JAMU (The Jan\u00e1\u010dek Academy of Performing Arts), and banned from theater. With friends\u2019 support, he landed the lead role in the film <em>Mlad\u00e1 l\u00e9ta<\/em>, launching his career despite further attempts to discredit him. He shared his life with his partner V\u00e1clav Kv\u011bta, living both in this apartment and in a&nbsp;cottage in Brtnice, where they pursued renovation and gardening. Cup\u00e1k, like director V\u00e1clav Kr\u0161ka, died of a&nbsp;lung illness in 1996. His wish was for his ashes to be scattered in Malvazinky.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. KARLOVY L\u00c1ZN\u011a \/ CHARLES\u2019 SPA \u2014 Novotn\u00e9ho l\u00e1vka 198\/13\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>Karlovy l\u00e1zn\u011b, built in 1848 and modernized in 1925 at the corner of Novotn\u00e9ho l\u00e1vka and Smetanovo n\u00e1b\u0159e\u017e\u00ed, included pools for men and women, bath services, a&nbsp;restaurant, a&nbsp;barber, and pedicure facilities. Known not only as a&nbsp;wellness center but also as a&nbsp;discreet spot for gay men to meet. In the 1920s, anonymous complaints to the police accused a&nbsp;blackmailer, \u201cTonda Tri\u010dka,\u201d who preyed on visitors. Post\u2011war, the baths became darker and more labyrinthine, atmospheric and charged. Regulars formed a&nbsp;tight\u2011knit group; newcomers were welcomed and noticed. The baths closed in 1975, the building decayed, and in 1999 it was transformed into the mega\u2011nightclub \u201cKarlovy l\u00e1zn\u011b\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. DEMONSTRACE HNUT\u00cd ZA ROVNOPR\u00c1VNOST HOMOSEXU\u00c1LN\u00cdCH OB\u010cAN\u016e \/ MOVEMENT FOR THE EQUALITY OF HOMOSEXUAL CITIZENS DEMONSTRATION \u2014 Starom\u011bstsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>On February 25, 1990, Prague\u2019s Old Town Square hosted the first (and for a&nbsp;long time last) public demonstration for homosexual citizens\u2019 rights after the Velvet Revolution. Organized by the radical Movement for the Equality of Homosexual Citizens (HRHO) \u2014 inspired by France\u2019s FHAR \u2014 its leader \u0160imon Form\u00e1nek promoted \u201cgay anarchy\u201d and rejected medical oversight of homosexuality. The protest followed an official demonstration commemorating the communist takeover, which was attended by President V\u00e1clav Havel. HRHO activists carried banners and engaged with passersby. According to writer V\u00e1clav Jamek, they faced harsh insults and even calls for castration from people who\u2019d recently celebrated a&nbsp;humanist speech by the president.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-heading\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. KAF\u00cdRNA U&nbsp;\u010cESK\u00c9HO P\u00c1NA \/ THE CZECH GENTLEMAN\u2019S CAF\u00c9 \u2014 T\u00fdnsk\u00e1 627\/7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block\n  block--core-paragraph\n  block--align-none\n      \">\n  \n<p>In 1995, in the basement of a&nbsp;historic Old Town building, the gay caf\u00e9 \u201cU \u010cesk\u00e9ho p\u00e1na\u201d opened. It was named after V\u00e1clav Budovec z&nbsp;Budova, whose statue adorned the building. With just 22 seats, it quickly became a&nbsp;beloved calm haven, though it also faced criticism over \u201cheterosexual misunderstanders.\u201d Forced out of its original location, it split in 1997 into U&nbsp;\u010cesk\u00e9ho p\u00e1na I&nbsp;in Koz\u00ed Street and U&nbsp;\u010cesk\u00e9ho p\u00e1na II opposite the Old\u2011New Synagogue.
