The Treasure, The Wedding Shirt, Lady Midday, The Golden Spinning-Wheel, Christmas Eve, Little Dove, The Water-Goblin or The Daughter\u2019s Curse\u2026 These are notorious texts perceived in contemporary Czech society as a kind of horror fairy tale. This perception sparked the idea of a theatrical adaptation aimed at accentuating Erben\u2019s phenomenal use of countless metaphors woven throughout the text, transcending mere fairy-tale motifs.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Director Eli\u0161ka \u0158\u00edhov\u00e1 has delicately dissected from Kytice (The Bouquet) the core of her production \u2013 the mother-daughter relationship. This dynamic serves not only as the foundational element of most of the ballads in the collection but also propels their narratives forward. Collaborating with dramaturg Al\u017eb\u011bta Nov\u00e1kov\u00e1, she explores the complexities of both a specific mother who kills her child and the archetype of a mother who cradles the world in her hands. The mother figure transcends gender, emerging as a universal role model, and thus is portrayed by award-winning actor Michal Kern. Lukas Blaha Bliss, S\u00e1ra Vosobov\u00e1 and David Petr\u017eelka embody the daughter at various stages of her journey.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Kytice stands as a timeless text woven into the fabric of Czech culture since the 19th century. It is this enduring presence that leads the creators to view Erben\u2019s verses as our collective home \u2013 a sanctuary in which few seek refuge because of its initial appearance of helplessness, cruelty and death. The production of Kytice, my homeland presents these themes as transformative necessities that both parents and children must confront to evolve their relationship. The ballads serve as symbolic mirrors reflecting the intricate dynamics of the child-parent relationship, perpetually entwined with the fear of inadequacy across generations.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n

We tell the tale of a mother who possesses an endless number of attempts to bring her daughter to adulthood. The child in Kytice dies again and again but is also continuously reborn.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
